[vtkusers] Transparent vtkImagePlaneWidget doesn't show volume render behind it

If a transparent vtkImagePlaneWidget is in front of a volume, it occludes it.
The following image shows a vtkImagePlaneWidget intersecting with a
vtkOpenGLGPUVolumeRayCastMapper. In the middle of the volume is a block that
should be visible through the plane because of the transparency, but is
actually occluded.

Is there a way to overcome this? Is there a way to adjust the order of
rendering? Is it even possible to fix this without altering vtk?
