I think you can just run gdb core.  You will get atleast some
messages.  With python it is easy to debug stuff on gdb.

$ cd /usr/share/doc/vtk/examples/graphics/examplesPython/

$ gdb python

(gdb) r
Starting program: /usr/bin/python 
(no debugging symbols found)...(no debugging symbols found)...
(no debugging symbols found)...(no debugging symbols found)...
