[Paraview] pvbatch on a server, launched from Mac - 3.98 works, 4.0 does not

I'm having the following problem.
I use X server on a FreeBSD box.
I connet to a linux server with ssh -XY
On the linux server I run pvbatch or paraview
command.
With PV 3.98.1 this works, but with
PV 4.0.1 it does not work.
Paraview or pvbatch 4.0.1 sit there seemingly
doing nothing, no error, no exit, no
graphical window.

So I was suspecting a FreeBSD issue.
However, now I had a confirmation from our
IT support team that this behaviour
is reproducible on Mac, i.e. connecting
from Mac via ssh to a linux server,
and launching pvbatch or paraview from there.

I wanted to check if somebody here
can reproduce the problem, either
with FreeBSD or Mac.
