[Paraview] Can't run VTKAVIWRITER - Unable to compress avi file error

David,
I downloaded and installed the basic and 64-bit codecs from the site you referenced below:
http://www.codecguide.com/download_kl.htm

It seems that this basic version should include Cinepak, which has the codec CVID:
http://www.codecguide.com/klcp_ability_comparison.htm

However, even with these installed (and my machine restarted), I still get the same error when trying to save an animation using ParaView 3.10.1. However, I did verify that I was able to save an animation using the same data as visualized in ParaView 3.8.1.

Any other suggestions (besides using ParaView 3.8.1 when I need to save animations)?

Thanks,
Emily

Hi Emily,

I reverted some changes to vtkAVIWriter so that this will use the old MSVC codec which has been problematic for some, but the change hasn't been part of a binary release yet. If you use ParaView 3.8 you should be able to save as avi. Alternatively, 3.10.1 is attempting to use a better codec called CVID. If you install one of the various codec packages on the internet containing cvid that might also solve your problem, assuming you can install software on your machine.

Hello,

I am having a problem trying to save an animation in avi from a loaded vtk legacy file series.

Here's the error:
ERROR: In ..\..\..\..\source\VTK\IO\vtkAVIWriter.cxx, line 172
vtkAVIWriter (000000000DBA6E00): Unable to compress C:\...\test.avi

Here's my platform:
Windows XP Professional x64 SP2
ParaView 3.10.1 64bit

I looked through the archives and saw this thread documenting the same problem, but it looks like it was never resolved.

Does anyone have any ideas about this?

Thanks,
Emily
