Hi Kevin,

You have already identified the typical solutions:

1) Decrease the image region of interest

2) Delete unused objects
    (if you have a pipeline you may call in some
     filters the method SetReleaseDataFlag(true).


About your last question:

  No, the fixed image doesn't have to have more
  slices than the moving image.
