 GPU mode works well for me (without the mentioned low res issue) and the default uses GPU in my case. I haven't tried OSPRay because I haven't built it.

I'm seeing this same issue with the smart volume mapper in
 vtkFixedPointVolumeRayCast mode.
 
 Not to introduce another bug, but have you tried using some of the other
 rendering modes in the smart volume mapper? I've only been able to get the
 vtkFixedPointVolumeRayCast mode working at all. The other rendering modes
 don't produce images for me.
