[vtkusers] coordinates of point in renderer window

Have you tried the ImagePlaneWidget?
http://www.vtk.org/doc/nightly/html/classvtkImagePlaneWidget.html#details

With DisplayTextOn () it shows coordinates in the corner of the screen, very
similar to fslview.
Is this similar to what you want?
