[vtkusers] Memory allocation problem

When I use the vtkMetaImageReader to read a large enough file (>= 500M), the program will crash immediately. How can I pre-detect this fault and make a peaceful return?
BTW: how do you treat large image data in general?

System: WinXP 32bit
VTK 5.10
