I had the same problem, what I did was to get the values from the
vtkGDCMImageReader , I have tried to find the source code but I couldn't
sorry. Any way doing It still working not as I wish as some dicom Images
looks too bright, don't know how to fix it , but can be done because when I
open this images using other DIcom Image viewers(OSIRIX)  It shows the
image with a nice contrast.
