It seems i was using 5.2 in my cmake file instead 5.6.
Unfortunately this didn't solve the problems i'm having with vtkCurvatures.

I'm going to try outputting the scalars as text and see if they're
sensible. Does anyone not what a sensible range of values for mean
Curvatures are?
