Hi Fred,

VTK 5.1 is not a release; it was the development (CVS) version of VTK 
prior to the VTK-5-2 branch. Similarly, VTK 5.3 is not a release; it is 
the development version AFTER the 5.2 branch. In VTK, odd minor version 
numbers are development versions; even minor version numbers are actual 
releases.
