Or try the many example TCL and Python programs provided with VTK. One might 
even do just what you want.

In addition the online documentation is better than the book for details and 
includes the example programs:

    http://www.vtk.org/doc/release/5.0/html

The book will be better on providing the big picture. I use both VTK and 
ParaView but use ParaView if possible since it is easier.
