You should look at the c++ doxygen documentation available at the kitware web site here: http://www.vtk.org/doc/release/5.0/html/

If you are used to eclipse with its object completion you should look at the configuration part relative to VTK here : http://dev.artenum.com/projects/cassandra/forum/how-to-use-eclipse-and-vtk

But first of all you will need to compile or get a compiled version of VTK with the Java wrapping. You may find some compiled version of VTK on the same web site.
