[vtkusers] Image processing with VTK/ITK?

Hi All,

I'm new to VTK and I'm wonder if I can use VTK for image processing? I used to work with Matlab's Image Processing ToolBox. What do u say? 
By the way I would appreciate any recommendation for othe open source image processing tools.
