Thanks for your reply.  In fact, the problem is not std::cin itself - it's the act of moving the console window during a rendering loop.  You can see this in the example tutorial/step2, if you slow the loop down a bit.  Majeed Amjad has pointed out that that the render window seems to stop by itself after a while, and I can confirm that I get this too, if I've previously moved the console window.  

I can confirm a much earlier posting that changing the executable's compatibility mode to NT works, but is hardly a satisfactory solution.

Why doesn't the simple render loop work robustly, and what do people do to get round it ?
