Let's see if what I'm doing makes sense:

As I reported already in the vtkusers list, a
compilation on my Linux box does not finish the tests
due a blowup of the X server during the TestTiling.tcl
(as reported in the "vtk on Linux resets X" post last
Thursday).

In order to narrow the search space for the bug I
attempting to build VTK using the system libraries.

Humm, do you have a clue why VTK could be killing the
X  server?
