[vtkusers] Why do GetNumberOfDICOMFileNames is a protected member?

Hi users, 

I use vtkDICOMImageReader to open a dicom serie (!) and I'm wondering why do GetNumberOfDICOMFileNames is a protected member?

And how can I get the number of files using this reader?
