[vtkusers] Separating the RGB components of a JPG image

Hello, 
I´m trying to get the components red, blue and green from a JPG image one by one, and get the histogram of the image. My final objective is to get the binary image (black and white), from the original JPG. How can I do it? Could anybody help me with the classes or members that I should use?
