[vtkusers] Can I map a scalar field to opacity field?

What I want to do (initialy at least) is control the opacity of a set of 3d glyphs. At the moment they are all represented by the same actor, so as far as I know I can only set  the opacity of all of them to the same value, but I would like to control them individually by means of a scalar field.
 
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
