[vtkusers] How is an image data created from polygonal mesh ?

Hi,
Could anyone please tell me how is the polygonal data converted to an image
data in VTK ? I don't want to know the filter used but I want to know the
algorithm. Is it simply taking the nearest neighbors of the polygonal data
on the image grid ?
