[vtkusers] Simpler way to vizualise image data in custom format

Hello,
I have some image files in a custom (very simple) ASCII format : each line of the file corresponds to a scanline of the image.
I would like to view a file as a grid where each value at coord (x, y) in the file correspond to the elevation (z) of the point (x, y) in the grid.
In fact, I want the same behaviour as a DEM file.
How to convert this files in vtk files with minimal effort in order to be able to vizualise them as DEM files ?
Thanks.
