I couldn't reproduce the first part of your problem. Example cone2 works fine 
for me (VTK 4.4, Qt 3.3.2, SuSE 9.0).

Suggestion: It looks like gcc is complaining about vtk, not vtkqt. Is your vtk 
install sound?

Do you have the path to libVtkQt.so.1 in your LD_LIBRARY_PATH? If step 1 of 
the VtkQt install worked for you, the libs are in VtkQt/lib, in the install 
dir.
