[vtkusers] Error reading ascii data

I have created a small data file (height field data) with only 72 points.  When 
I try to read the data from the file I get the following error message:

Generic Warning: In /hf/local/vtk-build/VTK/IO/vtkDataReader.cxx, line 833
Error reading ascii data!

pts read: 72

Does anyone know how to resolve this error message?
