[vtkusers] Retrieving 16-bit output data

I'm a new VTK user, and I am trying to do something that I think should
be very basic, so am hoping for help.

I have 16-bit image data.  I would like to volume render it (off
screen), and then retrieve the resulting 16-bit output data.  I will do
the image display and saving myself.

Any thoughts?
