Can't help you with the interactive part, but Vtk has a connectivity
filter that would probably take care of the non-interactive bits. Have a
look at:

http://www.vtk.org/doc/release/4.0/html/classvtkConnectivityFilter.html#_details

I guess vtkCellPicker or something similar might be useful too.
