I downloaded and installed Mesa from a different source and it
is now working.

  You don't have to compile the examples one by one. Go to the directory where the CXX examples
  are, .../graphics/examplesCXX. While in this directory, give the command "make". This will
  compile all the examples in this directory with the correct links. All the best
