With your renderwindow selected, press 't'.  This should put you in
trackball mode, which you might find more intuitive.  Now you can "grab" the
object with your mouse and move it with the MIDDLE button.  LEFT button
rotates (grab a point on the object and drag).  Clicking anywhere with your
RIGHT button and dragging zooms in and out (depending on drag direction).

FYI, I can really recommend buying the VTK book.  It's well written, teaches
you all about VTK and to boot it's a great introduction to several
visualisation techniques.
