Red Hat has the latest Mesa 3.4 on it's rpm list,
but for some reason that rpm seems broken
to me. I ended up going to http://www.mesa3d.org/
and downloading the source from there and I
managed to get vtk working on my laptop. Mesa
3.4 is pretty easy to configure now (it autodetects
almost everything). My previous adventures with
Mesa had been far too much of a "learning experience"

When I configured VTK, I decided to try and not
bother with the --with-mesa in my configuration
of VTK. Things all seem to work fine. What
is different about the Mesa drivers these days ?
