CXX and CC in configure..

Was trying to build (just C++ libraries) vtk from yesterday. Configure
seems to
want to use gcc, although I have CC and cc on my SGI Indigo2. I did set
the CXX and CC variables to point to the compilers, but still gcc is
being
used in the build.

I didnt have to do anything regarding this in earlier verisons of VTK
that I built.
Has something changed in the configure scripts?
