scripting exceptions for VTK errors?

Do the VTK-Pythoneers out there have any suggestions on how to catch VTK
errors?  I.e., I'd like to have a Python exception thrown whenever the VTK code
detects an error.  Take as an example, reading a VTK polydata file with a
StructGridReader.

The question applies more generally to the Tcl and Java wrappers too.
