Shouldn't the OpenGL libraries implement the API, even if certain parts of it are not HW accelerated?
(Even with an old 2D card, you can run OpenGL apps, even though they're slow. Is there a reason why
the picking functionality in OpenGL should be any more dependent than the rest of it on a hardware
implementation?)
