the "Bypass" feature in imaging

The problem is that although a filter can get its input, and then its 
input's source, (and therefore know the previous filter in the pipeline), 
it cannot find the "next" filter because it does not know what its output 
is connected to (which could be multiple things....) At the application 
level you know what the pipeline is, so you can reconfigure it, but the 
pipeline cannot reconfigure itself.
