Reading volumes from 8-bit images ???

I have a large number of images that are 8-bit,
unsigned-char only. Normally I would use
vtkVolume16Reader.  How would I handle 8-bit
data ????

Is there any easy way to do this ???

Do I need to make another class, using the
abstract class vtkVolumeReader ????
