For VTK 4, there was no long-term support, but neither were their any
restrictions on developers continuing to push fixes to the old branch.  I
continued to push fixes for VTK 4 for a couple years, at least.

So there really was a bit of long-term support going on for VTK 4, just not
from Kitware ;)
