Yes, it will work on ppc64.  Faster?  I don't know.  Only the stuff in
the #ifdef i386 block is endian-dependent, the other #if blocks don't
care about endianness.

If VTK sets VTK_TYPE_USE___INT64, then I use __int64 ;)
