Brad,

Sorry for the delay, I've been out of town.  I haven't had a chance to
look at the code, but your changes sound great.  With the addition of
a collection of test files written by different machines to confirm
portability, your changes should allow us to move files back and forth
(almost) without care.  I'd be most concerned about floating point
formats from the compatibility point of view.
