Thanks for the fast reply.
I have already found and tried the x86 version of r8b but it fails with the same error message (I didn't realise that r8e was the first x86_64 version). The current android.toolchain.cmake file is the one I have been using as I downloaded the source from git in the last 24 hours.
The __DETECT_TOOLCHAIN_MACHINE_NAME macro seems to fail as it traverses the various possible ndk toolchains. Unfortunately I don't know enough about bash to work out what the macro is doing.
