Hello !

i tryed about all the same steps as you did (Cave render modul), 
at the end a got the answere that it is simply not supported in Paraview 3.X .There are so many descriptios on the web about paraview and it's switches,
just dont trust any of them, only the one from paraview itselfe is  true.
Also the help from pvclient or pvserver or paraview itselfe is not complety true, there are many many 
switches which are simply not documentet or not true.
I myselfe stick to old 2.6 Version also ist old ist working.
