[Paraview] Stream lines crash on large dataset

I have to reduce max steps down to 100-200 and keep max length to less than 1/20th of the domain length to avoid crash.
I usually tried with RK2 and initial length set to 0.5 of cell length. Other combinations do not appear to improve.
Sometimes the code does not crash but simple "freeze"after some times: CPU load is down to zero and no stream line is drawn.

The same behaviour was present in version 1.8.5 as well as 2.0, 2.2.0 and now 2.2.1

One extra remark: the uppercase ".CASE" extension is not recognized, despite appearing in the list of extensions in the open data dialog; however the lowercase extension works fine.
