[Paraview] timers

I have a need for some sort of timing capability in the 
RenderWindowInteractor that ParaView uses. However, the ParaView 
Interactor (vtkPVGenericRenderWindowInteractor) does not seem to implement 
a timer. Does anyone have any ideas about putting a timer in? This seems 
like something that should be available on a basic implementation level so 
I might do it on my own local copy and if anyone else has done this 
already, I would appreciate any pointers you could give me. Thanks.
