[Paraview] sample XML file

Is there an example XML file that shows how to get Paraview to read XML? 
I've so far been unsuccesful getting paraview to read and properly display
stuff from an XML file.  I'm using the VTK XML format, and I even tried
the XML sample at the bottom of the VTK doc
(http://www . vtk . org/pdf/file-formats . pdf).  Since I'm new to VTK and
Paraview, I'm surely doing something trivially wrong, but I can't figure
out what.
