Zein, 

Try calling ReadImageInformation() on the MetaIO object.  This
should read all the meta data without reading the bulk data.

Then you should be able to query the meta data from MetaIO object
(via methods in the superclass ImageIOBase)

is it possible to read the information (start, spacing, dimensions, etc) 
of a metaimage file withour having to load the whole file  ?
