Image Analysis for Medical Research

This course introduces attendees to several open-source, freely available toolkits and applications for pre-clinical medical image analysis and visualization.


Course overview

Throughout the course, emphasis will be placed on solving real-world research problems and on providing hands-on experience.

Driving research problems to be addressed include:

  • Small animal image analysis
  • Tumor volume estimation and tracking
  • CT/PET image registration
  • Histology reconstruction

Technologies covered include:

  • CT, MR, PET image processing
  • Web-based image collection, distribution, and archiving.
  • The Insight Toolkit for medical image segmentation and registration (ITK)
  • The Visualization Toolkit (VTK)
  • ITK's image registration tools, segmentation tools, and derived tools
  • Kitware's VolView and ParaView applications

Instructors

  • Stephen R. Aylward, Ph.D., is Chief Medical Scientist at Kitware, Inc. He also serves as President of the Insight Software Consortium, a non-profit organization that promotes open-source software for medical image analysis. Dr. Aylward was a tenured Associate Professor of Radiology, Computer Science, and Surgery at UNC prior to joining Kitware.
  • Juliien Jomier is Staff Research Scientist at Kitware, Inc. and a lead developer of ITK.
  • Jean-Philippe Guyon is lead image analysis scientist at ILS, Inc. He is also a contributor to ITK and VTK.
