Dear Kenichiro, thank you for your reply.

Yes, I forgot to specify that I'm using VTK 6.3.  When I use the
vtkStructured grid directly (or the vtkDataSet as in my example code) I get
a cell count of 512,000 cells instead of 960,000.  So it's definitely more
than a rendering bug.  I also have a copy of version 7.1.1 I compiled some
time ago, I'll try that.
