[vtkusers] How does VTK measure surface distance on 3D model?

The vtkDijkstraGraphGeodesicPath traces out the shortest path along cell
edges and is restricted to computing a path from one vertex to another
instead of from an arbitrary point to another arbitrary point, which may
not be what you want.

For true geodesic calculation on a surface, you can try the contribution in
this VTK Journal article:
