[vtkusers] libvtkNetCDF_cxx.so not found during compilation

I've been using VTK for some time now, and I'm trying to set up VTK for
development on another system. However, during compile time of the project
I'm working on, I get an error saying that libvtkNetCDF_cxx.so is not found
and is needed by libvtkIO.so. Both objects are there in
/usr/local/lib/vtk-5.8/. Any suggestions?
