For this to work you cannot use just a simple main function.
You should create the vtk window in a second thread. But I guess this goes
beyond the scope of this forum.

If I were you I would try to make myself familiar with qt4. Unfortunately I
have no experience with qt4, so I can't help you further. You also may
google for "gui multithreaded application c++".
