[vtkusers] 3D slicing

Hello
I am a newbie in vtk and have a stl file and want to slice it.
I use vtkSTLReader and vtkCutter to cutte it (plane z=1) but I can't write
it to image file (png format). How can I do that? and How can I set the
density of out put image (DPI)?
if vtkSTLReader convert my stl file to a 3 dimension matrix, I think it's
faster and simpler to work with matrix to get my layer isn't it?
