[vtkusers] What is the current status of the new image rendering classes?

Hi,
I am a PhD Student at the DKFZ in Heidelberg, Germany. We are developing
MITK (http://www.mitk.org/) which uses VTK for 3D rendering purposes. My
current project is to restructure the 2D rendering in MITK which relies
on an old library we want to get rid of. We would like to use VTK for
this purposes. However, the current Mapper (vtkOpenGLImageMapper) does
not provide enough features to replace our Mapper.

I found a very interesting Wiki page about new image rendering classes
in development (http://www.vtk.org/Wiki/VTK/Image_Rendering_Classes).
These classes would provide a lot of important features for us.
Therefore, I would like to know what the current status of these classes
is. Is there actually development ongoing? When do you think they will
be released? Perhaps, I could contribute code for these classes. Looking
forward to hear of you.
