Hi Ken,

I don't know if this information should be useful for you few years later,
but just in case... have you tried to add an observer to the output window
object. Every vtk object can add an observer, listening for an event on the
object.
So, I had the same problem as you and found, that when an error or warning
message is printed in the output file through the vtk output window 
UserEvent event type is fired. If you expirience difficulties with the
callback in java, which you should use for adding and observer please let me
know ;)
